"Be My Baby" was written by Jeff Barry (born as Joel Adelberg; April 3, 1938), Ellie Greenwich (Oct. 23, 1940 – Aug. 26, 2009) and Phil Spector (New York, 26 December 1939 – Stockton (California), 16 January 2021). It was recorded on July 5, 1963 at Gold Star Studios Hollywood, LA.

The song’s innocence, sweetness and angst is part of the song’s sustained power.
At its heart, “Be My Baby” is as much about power and control as it is about romance.

Today “Be My Baby” is as ubiquitous as a pop classic gets with its plinking pianos and castanets, its echo-chambered double vocals and massive drums. Those drums (boom-ba-boom) at the start, immortalized by drummer † Hal Blaine (5 februari 1929, Holyoke, Massachusetts - † 11 maart 2019, Palm Desert, California), are a harbinger of something exciting is going to happen.
Then suddenly it’s magic when the words are sung. And when the song is over there is this lingering believe of a happy ending: “he came around, and they hooked up”….

The song has been covered by everyone from John Lennon to Maroon 5. It’s been honored by the Library of Congress and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The group recorded the song in Los Angeles at Gold Star Studios and was released August 1963.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys once said: “It’s the greatest record ever produced. No one will ever top that one.” “I was driving and I had to pull over to the side of the road — it blew my mind; “It was a shock.” Wilson estimates that he’s heard “Be My Baby,” by the Ronettes, more than 1,000 times. Just 21 and already frustrated with his band’s basic surf music, he bought the single and set about deconstructing its arrangement and production.
Wilson: “I started analyzing all the guitars, pianos, bass, drums and percussion,” he said by telephone. “Once I got all those learned, I knew how to produce records.”

Veronica Yvette Bennett was born in Washington Heights, Manhattan, the daughter of an African-American-Cherokee mother and Irish–American father. Bennett and her sister, Estelle Bennett (1941–2009), were encouraged to sing by their large family, as was their cousin, Nedra Talley (1946-). Together they formed the Darling Sisters, known later as the Ronettes. They performed locally while attending George Washington High School in Washington Heights.
