As for blackcurrants, the flavor is not banned (was not, anyway). It was the blackcurrant plant itself that was banned until 1966. The reason was that the plant acted as a host for the white pine blister rust, which threatened the U.S. timber industry. The federal ban on the plant was lifted in 1966, though some states still ban the plant. Blackcurrant drinks are not an issue.

Water will boil in the microwave, but most Americans don't have a huge demand for hot water throughout the day unless they drink tea. Instant coffee is rare, we make it in a coffee pot or Keurig.
The bathroom stall thing cracks me up...Bathroom floors in the US are nasty!
You do your best not to let your underwear be anywhere near the floor, much less touch it. It takes a real weirdo to get on their hands in knees to look under a stall at that angle. Likewise, making eye contact. It's take real effort to make eye between the gap.

I feel like too many people don't understand how a microwave actually works.

From my understanding, It emits microwaves which excite water molecules in food and heat them causing them to boil and evaporate thus heating the food up. So, when you put literally just water in the microwave, it boils fairly quickly. Its incredibly sanitary and faster than any kettle, coffee maker, teapot etc.

Water does boil in the microwave 😅 you can see it bubbling and my stove top tea kettle takes forever. I cannot detect any taste difference.

BTW the British were the originators of mm/dd/yyyy date format. None of the other colonial powers in the Americas (Dutch, French, or Spanish) used mm/dd/yyyy. Eventually the British caved by 20th century to use dd/mm/yyyy to be like the rest of Europe. US didn't change but UK did.

The vast majority of us would never pull our pants down to our ankles in a public toilet, mostly due to the potential of germs and unseen dirt. We usually stop just above or below the knees.

Normal people won't invade your privacy by looking at you in a stall.

The level of idiocy regarding the microwaving is staggering.

The bathroom stall door gap is a legal issue. They used to reach the floor, but a woman, who locked herself in, had a medical issue and no one could reach her and had to break down the door. She sued the business and as part of the fallout, laws were passed that there has to be a gab so a person could get in during a rescue.

I don’t understand why she would say that it is unsanitary to boil water in the microwave. Then cooking anything in the microwave would be unsanitary. That just doesn’t make sense.

Re: restroom stall doors. They are like that because of building codes. It's mandatory. EMT must have a way of getting to an individual quickly.
Additionally, no one is walking up and peeping in the cracks or under doors. It's culturally rude and would cause a ruckus.

The gap under the bathroom stall also allows you tell ask the person on either side of you for some toilet paper. They can hand you some from under the stall. You usually don't realize there isn't any toilet paper until you go to grab some.
People don't pull on the door to try and open it because they can see your feet. No one looks thru the cracks! The official reason is for safety. I guess the lock could break and kids aren't always smart enough to unlock the door to get out. They can lock it though. I have heard of people dying on the toilet too. The inside of the doors have a hook to hang your jacket or purse too.

Of course water boils in the microwave, LOL. It's a LOT faster than a kettle and it's just hot water, tastes the same.

A microwave is faster to make a cup of tea or instant coffee or Ramen noodles, and if you set the right amount of time, it does boil.

This is the second time I've heard you ask why we don't use a kettle for coffee. Most Americans use a coffee machine, not a kettle. I'd say the coffee maker is the American equivalent to a kettle, because every household has one

I recognize a lot of folks have commented on the toilet gaps, but they're there for safety reasons and as for looking through the various gaps,

1. We've had the gaps for decades and as children were taught NOT to look through them.

2. If all the doors are closed a quick check for feet lets you know it's occupied or not.

3. We avoid letting our pant legs or panties touch the floor. They're kept as close to the knees as possible. Public restrooms get A LOT OF TRAFFIC! Therefore, despite them getting cleaned multiple times a day, they're still disgusting.

4. We don't make eye contact through the cracks in the enclosure, we look straight ahead or down. It's rude for passersby to try to check through those cracks and as stated above we're taught not to try and look.

5. Legally we have to have the gap at the bottom for safety reasons. Bad things like heart attacks, seizures, fainting spells, etc. happen when they happen, even in a bathroom stall. Safety workers (paramedics, EMT's or someone trained in first aid can quickly access the stall instead of trying to kick, push, break through the door.

6. If a child locks his/herself in or crawls under and can't get out, there is access to help them figure it out.

We are not a country of peeping Tom's! We don't care to peep at you while you're evacuating, just like you don't care for people trying to peep at you. Frankly, I wish folks would just stop bringing it up. It's not the big deal foreigners make it out to be.

many americans use a tea kettle on the stove. we typically do not use electric kettles. many people use microwave to boil water in mug and then add tea bag, hot chocolate, etc. there is no difference in taste if microwave is clean. itbis not unsanitary.

I don’t understand why she was so offended with the hot water in microwave. They do things differently in the UK that’s all . I can heat up water in my microwave in just about 1 to 1 in a half minutes to boiling in microwave and no difference in taste for me.

I’m confused. If Brits drink tap water why is microwaved tap water not clean?
