Department of Energy also has SPOs. They protect nuclear material at either nuclear power plants or weapons plants which fall under NNSA.

Also, a reminder; lots of small local agencies rely on security police (sometimes called Special Police) to perform these functions. I know about SPOs at Zoos, Convention Centers, Art Houses, and other public facilities.

There are a number of other agencies that utilize the federal 0083 Police classification to hire in that title: ie. Security Protective Service Police (CIA), Defense Logistics Agency Police ( DLA), NSA Police
I am a former "Special Officer" from NYC and was employed by NYC Human Resources Administration as one of their 130 unarmed policeofficers (HRA). The same shield, patch, and uniform as NYPD, as do the NYC Health & Hospitals Police (HHC), NYC Homeless Services Police ( also HRA owned and operated, but a separate law enforcement agency), and NYC DCAS Police ( Department of City-Wide Administration )
Each of these agencies employ state recognized and certified Peace Officers to keep the peace, quell public disorder, and if neccessary to arrest violators of state and federal laws and agency rules and regulations.

When I was a new person in the working world I never thought about the security officer type of job but like a lot of sophomore in college I actually think 🤔, well you know and a friend that I actually think did me a favor and I actually thanks for letting me in the security officer type of job because I actually learned a lot about life and actually I am grateful for the important thing and actually learned to listen to people and I would of never thought 🤔💭 I learned more about social interaction and how to get along with people who because yes and growing up as a spoiled child it helped me in all other aspects of America and how fortunate I actually learned that I am just beginning to...so much fun 😊 and I have a beautiful city am blessed to live in San Francisco.

I love how you touched on security don’t help with LE careers. I know of many security guards that think because they work at a gas station, a Walmart and other places that’s non government is going to boost their chances of getting into law enforcement careers. Some even get all tact out like the LE personnel is going to be impressed and offer them to come and try out, LOL.

I’ve worked within the government sector security at a local level and non government sector. I can tell you for sure that non government sector will not help a person.

Especially because in the non government sector, no one of government/ law enforcement is watching/ supervising you NOR do your employers have ties and pull within the LE community to recommend you on a personal level to the trainers, directors and the head of LE on a personal note.

If trained properly, special policing can be beneficial to clients possibly at a lower cost.

In Washington DC Special police officers typically work in the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city, and unfortunately are grossly underpaid, now if you have enough experience to work at a company who has government contracts you can make alot of money for little work.

083’s don’t get paid well, usually only go up to GS-7

I'm hopeful going to become an SPO because I have mild cerebral palsy and unfortunately for me being a full sworn police officer isn't possible due to my CP but a SPO job is physically possible for me

Would you or anyone else know where to apply for law enforcement security officer position for the Federal Protective Service? I keep looking everywhere, especially on USAJobs and can't seem to see anything like that. Also, would being an active duty veteran and a current reservist help in the hiring process and increase my chances of being hired there when they start hiring?
