FINALLY! Elon Musk JUST REVEALED SpaceX INSANE NEW Nuclear Reactor

A nuclear reactor that powers over 1000 homes with 1 MegaWatt? Technology never fails to surprise us! Nuclear power is an amazing technology that can be used to generate energy. However, there is one major problem. They are extremely dangerous and heavy which makes it complicated to implement in factories or households. But Elon Musk is focusing on a portable nuclear power generator which makes generator energy more cost-effective. The lightweight SpaceX nuclear reactor could be a groundbreaking technology!

Do you think nuclear energy is the future? Let us know 😄

This is a private company separate from SpaceX.

Safety; Helium coolant which doesn't need a pressurizer, and is chemically inert is a great option. TRISO pebbles which can't melt is also a good option. This means even if the unit goes in runaway, or runs out of spec, it's likely not to do anything to break itself. So, any active safety monitoring built in would have an easy job of shutting this down.

Pebbles aren't known for the ability to reprocess the fuel easily, so is likely to be long lived waste... however if the unit doesn't need refueling for 8 years, you're probably looking at a handful of marbles per decade.

Sounds like a perfect application to replace generators. One wouldn't need containment, but might need to be under security depending on other people's analysis.

What doesn't seem obvious is if it can load follow. That is, if no power is needed, does it draw down the neutronics automatically, such as a molten salt reactor would. If one had that feature too, these things could operate basically forever if they're only to fill a backup generator role.

Sharp design. I wish them well!

Radiant is a separate company with no ties to SpaceX or Musk, the title is purposely wrong

Yes. It's definitely the way to go.

Nice!
You don't need to get clickbaity and put SpaceX in the title when you have an interesting topic anyway.. :)
The word Radiant isn't in the title or description.
Also not sure why there was a crossed out hydrogen symbol in the thumbnail, is there an association between hydrogen and fission I'm missing?

I like Radiant's new design.. Helium is very sensible, except that it is quite rare on earth... Oh well, another excuse for moon mining!

could use this in many places across America and the rest of the world

Not a scientist but I had the idea of personal small portable nuclear reactors over 15 years ago for home use and small or even large businesses

This idea has been around since the 1950’s

Waited and waited to see which fuel they were planning to use..
Molten salt?
Because, if not.. meh

Gas cooled reactors have a dismal history. Billions have been spent again and again and no joy. So much blab and CGI and no real tangible numbers or answers, like how are these things cooled, sited, vented, protected, or shielded? How much cost per megawatt? How to maintain something so compact and convoluted? Nobody has ever made a net cent with a small or gas-cooled reactor and probably never will.
