Progressives & Republicans Team Up to Oppose Senator Manchin's Provisions | EWTN News Nightly

Avoiding a government shutdown seems likely on Capitol Hill. It comes as West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin reversed course on his demands after push-back from Republicans and some Democrats. It was a surprise move by the Progressives and Republicans as they teamed up and banded together to oppose Senator Manchin's provision, which would loosen oil and gas permitting regulations. Despite his best effort to convince GOP senators and progressives in his own party, a defeated Senator Manchin eventually pulled his streamline permitting provision from the government funding bill. The bill lacked the votes to avoid a GOP filibuster and threatened a government shutdown. Republicans say it would make inflation worse. Senator Roger Marshall says, "Energy accounts for about one third of the inflation right now. And with this permitting process, we give the federal government the power to choose whether the energy source is wind and solar versus nuclear, coal or natural gas. And that's going to drive the cost of energy up." Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.
