the penalties are given when a foul is commited inside of the square white painted area near the goals of each team. the last one for france was because the ball hitted the arm of the argentinian player, he should have jumped with the arms touching his torso so there would be "unintentional" and its not a foul (in cases like this where the opponent is kicking). the the other fouls are like hitting, grabbing t-shirts, and every type of aggression that is not pushing like shoulder to shoulder which is permitted to some degree, so defenders needs to be careful when the ball is inside that zone cuz if you like throw your feet and miss the ball, you can hit the opponent in the leg (and the attacker can kindly let himself fall, stopping the play) and get a penalty, messi is kinda the opposite, he gets hits a lot since he dribbles so close to the opponent and almost always try to keep they play going instead of playing the foul game, altough he did got a lot of penaltys in the WC, thats like the only defense to stop him, just foul him
