Hello there.
This is my newest build of the Cunard cargo liner RMS Carpathia of 1903. It was built over the course of about a month in 1.8:1 scale. She is 306 block long and 37 blocks wide.
The RMS Carpathia was a mixed oceanliner/cargo ship built i 1903 by Swan Hunter & Co in Wallsend, England for the Cunard Line. She was the modified "half-sister" of the SS Ivernia and the RMS Saxonia, and was built with a focus on cargo and third class, in which she was far ahead of her time with what she offered in terms of passenger accommodations. Third class received their own ladies' room, smoke room, and large dining saloon. There was also no open berth spaces, but instead only smaller cabins, something very uncommon during this time. She also sported a smaller but luxurious and comfortable Second Class, with a library, smoke room and dining saloon, as well as a number of cabins.
Carpathia set out on her maiden voyage on the 5th of May, 1903, experiencing a relatively uneventful career from there on, serving on the Liverpool-New York route in the summer and the New York-Mediterranean route in the winter. In 1905, Carpathia saw a major refit, receiving a first class for the first time, with a myriad of other changes to the rest of the ship.
On the 11th of April, 1912, Carpathia departed New York headed to Fiume, Austria-Hungary. On the 14th, she received several distress messages from a nearby liner in distress, which had struck an iceberg and was sinking by the head. Carpathia's wireless transmitter Harold Cottam learned this was the White Star Liner Titanic, travelling to New York on her maiden voyage. He immediately informed Captain Arthur Rostron, who took immediate action. He ordered the ship turned to Titanic's direction, with hot meals, drinks and blankets prepared for Titanic's passengers. The public rooms and empty cabins were to be converted into housing space for them, and all cargo doors were to be opened to take them onboard. Rostron ordered Carpathia's hot water, heating, an anything not needed cut off to spare every little bit of extra possible speed, forcing the ship up the dangerous 17 knots, dodging iceberg on their mad dash to the doomed ship.
In the end, the Carpathia was too late to save all of Titanic's passengers. She slipped below the waves at 2:20 am local time, an hour and a half before Carpathia arrived at her position, taking down with her 1496 people. During the next five hours Carpathia would take on the remaining 712 survivors, scattered in 20 lifeboats that had barely had time to escape the sinking ship. The last survivor taken onboard was Titanic's Second Officer Charles Lightoller, and so Carpathia set sail for New York at 9 am. Captain Rostron and his crew received medals from Titanic's survivors, cementing them as heroes and Carpathia as a legendary ship.
When World War 1 broke out, Carpathia was drafted into service to transport troops from the US and Canda to Europe. On the 15th of July, 1918, Carpathia was sailing bound for Boston as part of a convoy of six ships, when she was torpedoed by the German u-boat SM U-55. She was hit in the forward cargo holds first, then once more straight into her engine room, which disabled the ship and prevented any form of escape. Captain William Prothero ordered the ship to be evacuated and any documents and other valuable items destroyed. She was then hit with a third and final torpedo, dooming the ship. The sloop HMS Snowdrop approached the scene and waded off the submarine, before picking up Carpathia's survivors. Carpathia slipped below the waves at 11 am, taking one hour and 45 minutes to sink, leaving 218 survivors, with 5 dead. Her wreck was found in 2000, laying upright on her seabed with most of her superstructure having collapsed.
Until next video, have a good one, and thanks for watching! :-)
