Only when a system is in equilibrium or transitions between equilibrium states do the laws of thermodynamics come into play. We address some crucial issues in this sixth unit of class 11 chemistry, including how to calculate the energy changes involved in a chemical reaction or process. Should it happen or not? What fuels a chemical process or reaction? How far along are the chemical reactions? Additionally, we study system types, how to calculate work done, entropy, spontaneity, and Gibbs free energy.

After completing this chapter you will be able to understand
define the terms "system" and "environment";
• recognise the differences among closed, open, and isolated systems;
• a description of internal energy, work, and heat;
• state the first law of thermodynamics and give a mathematical expression for it;
• compute the contributions of work and heat to energy changes in chemical systems;
• Describe U and H state functions.
• correlate U and H; measure U and H experimentally;
• specify the H standard states;
• compute the changes in enthalpy for various types of reactions;
• cite Hess's law of constant heat summation and use it;
• recognise extensive from intensive properties;
• a definition of spontaneous and involuntary processes;
• describe the thermodynamic state function of entropy and use it to model spontaneity;
Describe the Gibbs energy change (G);
• establish a link between the equilibrium constant and G in terms of spontaneity.
