I should be able to organize my house on my own.

I heard this from so many women in the Cincinnati area when I did in-home organization. They usually started the conversation by telling me that they have or suspected that they have ADHD.

Organization is a learnable skill, but those with ADHD need more structure and support. It's not a matter of intellect or ability. YOU can get organized even if you have ADHD!

My husband and I struggled over this for years. I finally got diagnosed in April of this year at the age of 54. The more I learn about ADHD, the more I am amazed, and angry, that this neurological disorder is not considered legitimate. It isn’t “all in my head” or “a little boy issue” or a “lazy” issue or any number of other excuses issue. We shouldn’t have to struggle this hard with life or be shamed this much when it is actually a chemical imbalance in the way we process and function that can be seen on MRI’s, brain scans, and very specific traits that non-ADHD people don’t have. And it affects everything, not just being unable to concentrate in a school environment. We also shouldn’t have to hide our issues or figure out ways to cope or mimic “normal behavior” until we just can’t anymore. Being able to appear to “fit in” isn’t a reason to suspect we don’t have ADHD either because appearances are only the tip of the volcano. It will eventually erupt leaving destruction everywhere in its wake. If someone broke a bone or had cancer, no one would tell them to just do it or work harder or call them lazy. ADHD, for lack of a better more realistic name, is no less disabling.

Sorry for the soap box diatribe.
