I lost my job during the pandemic (funny enough in the game industry) and it was nice to pay 5 bucks only and not have to give up my favorite thing while living on my savings looking for a new job. Also when I finally found a job. I bought the games I enjoyed with the discount added. It's super nice that a lot of indie developers know how much money they have instead of navigating in the dark.

For many countries in the world gamepass it's just INCREDIBLY amazing, for places where ONE full price game it's basically a third of the minimum wage, paying so little for that amount of really good games it's incredible, and sometimes it's the only option.

Kotaku having a bad take? Perish the thought.

Gamepass saved me a lot of money. For example with FH5, I thought about buying it because I loved FH4 but instead of that, I just played on Gamepass and after a month or so, I completed all the story missions, etc and got bored of it and I'm glad I didn't paid 50€ for it.

It’s the same issue people do with saying “I’ve got nothing to eat, let’s just go get something.” There’s literally always something to eat, but having so many choices sometimes makes it fatiguing when you just want something consistent now.

Same issue with Netflix. My parents still have satellite TV and it’s still enjoyable to flip on the science channel and go “ohh what’s how it’s made covering today?” It scratches a different itch.

3 years ago I told Google to stop recommending me Kotaku articles, and they just started suggesting them to me again. Time to go check that box once more.

I think Luke might be on the money with his comment at 3:20, I don't think its often a lack of games to play, but instead "Too much choice" (Not a bad thing though) to the point people get burned out because of trying to pick which one they want to play that day.

I convinced my brothers to upgrade to Game Pass Ultimate since they were already paying for Gold monthly, and it REALLY helped them get away from just playing Call of Duty and Fortnite. One of my brothers became a racing fanatic and has a whole Forza racing setup in his room, the other has been addicted to playing through the Yakuza games and the Hitman trilogy.
The best part is that a lot of the games on Game Pass are crossplay with PC Game Pass, making it much easier and more accessible for me to play with my brothers who are on console.
For 10 (15 for ultimate) bucks a month, its one of the best deals around right now

Game pass is extremely good when you realize the system thinks of you as a "new user" if you turn off autorenew and let it lapse. I've had it for like a year and have spent like $12.

Quick pointer for Luke. Games on GOG are all drm free. As such you actually own those game compared to steam

shame that every form of entertainment always returns to Cable, because the whole reason why all these services do big numbers is entirely because they're convenient. & Right now GamePass is the shining example of Economically Convinient

But Companies would rather make No Money if they can't make All the money

No, Linus owning what you buy is not a luxury, it should be the standard. Rental options are predatory and dystopian is they become the norm

gamepass long term: bad for the industry. look at what's happening to streaming and cable.
gamepass short term: really good for the consumers

i'm with linus up until he said he feels owning your library is 'unnecessary' because private ownership is very important. if you don't own the product, it can be taken away at any point. very great reset vibes

If I always play, I might have a gamepass subscription but I sometimes I play for a month and stop for 2 months or even more.
And people should really start to broaden their perspective on games. There are games that entertains you but there are hidden gems out there that entertains you and at the same time gives you experience that you won't forget. This usually happens with indie games. Gaming is not all about graphics and replayability and contents, sometimes gaming can be short but sweet and lasts long in your memories.

Game pass was a fantastic way for me to discover new indie games without having to outright buy them. It saved me an immense amount of money while also giving developers guaranteed pay, so pretty much everyone won in that situation.

i'm somewhat biased as i don't pay for my pass (i'm employed by a studio owned by Uncle Mic) but oh man! i haven't had to buy a game in quite awhile. there is so much to play, games i've never heard of, AAA first party games, old classics, it's amazing.

People act as if you can’t simply cancel your subscription and renew it when new games you’re interested in goes on the platform. It’s what I do

But what do you have when you stop paying? Its renting....like blockbuster.
2030: your monthly payments phone wakes you up in your rented apartment, you drive to your job in your rented car and use rented tools, then at the end of the day you go home and relax by gaming on your rented console to play rented games, then you watch some rented movies/tv shows before going to bed and repeat.
After 60 years of this you die and have no physical assets or creations as proof that you even existed.

I have EPIC burnout - I keep grabbing freebies that look good; haven't played 10% of them.
The two big successes from my perspective on the freebie list are Subnautica and Satisfactory; I bought the alpha of Below Zero because of the free release of the first and Satisfactory because of their free trial weekend. I have not been disappointed in either - but have shelved both for the moment.
