Thank you for this. I have had a crippling addiction to giving to dog shelters for years now. It started when my parents both were charity abusers and were constantly giving to charity. I hear this argument all the time: "I'm totally selfish, but you only help people to feel good, so you're no better than me."
...and I call bullshit. Reward is simply the neurological mechanism for motivation. Being a good person isn't about _whether_ you get gratification, it's about _where_ you get gratification: from helping others or helping yourself.

"warm fuzzy glow" is only a selfish thing if you want it to be a selfish thing. This behaviour exists for altruism. It exists because there is an evolutionary advantage to being altruistic, and this in built reward system helps make sure altruism happens, thus serving the human race as a whole.
