I've raised Nubians on undergrowth, briars, wild roses, prairie grass and mixed brome pastures. If you feed them well they will stay in fences, but they are very smart and if they had opposable thumbs they would give us a run for our money. Mix edible DE with their mix and that takes care of the worms.

Nice!! I feel like everything I've been told about goats is either due to them NOT having access to pasture or due to the poisons sprayed on the stuff in the feed. Neither of which will be a problem for my goats, so i picked up two yesterday. 😅

I raised goats when I was younger. They are generally pretty healthy, and reproduce often and in multiples. I milked some and made cheese, and sold or traded the kids to pay for feed for all my animals. They are an unending source of entertainment. They do climb on EVERYTHING though. They are aggressive with predators. They will eat all of your bushes, but also love kudzu. I hated having to sell them.

good day friend....my house is on a square 1.5 acre with the house in the center. i want to fence the entire yard and put goats on the land. just let them run everywhere in the yard. im thinking it would keep the grass down. how many can i have? and is it a good idea to let them run the entire yard?

These days when the word "expert" is used. . . I look for proven experience over academic credentialing. That and WHERE they are getting paid from. . . I'll take advice from an old timer that grows better than me ANY DAY, but an academic that "has read" . . nope.

Have been told, read, "explained, " etc. . so many things by what our society considers to be experts only to find them to be WRONG. Was told by an extension agent (academic expert, that never ran their own farm) that certain fruit trees just wouldn't grow in our area because of the soil. . . years later I've got many of those EXACT trees growing GREAT (producing a LOT too). The soil here is actually one of the BEST soils IF it gets a little irrigation (not even that much) AND some wood mulch to retain moisture / add organic matter. The same expert told me NOT to mulch with wood because of the termites here. . . turns out the termites are "desert termites" that don't go anywhere near homes. These termites have been a key ingrediant in improving our soil quality. Many of these experts think the world revolves around their degrees and expect reality to bend to their "expertise." . . . that ecosystems will follow their will and guidance. .

Was also told to not run goats in our orchard . . . it is working GREAT. Was also told to not let chickens near our vineyard, yet when we do there is less pest pressure than ever before. . .we didn't even need to spray BT anymore.

Okay but I have to say this- your methods and management practices up north would not do as well in the south eastern USA. Parasite loads here are no joke and since goats did not revolve to be grazers like sheep and cattle did they are affected more by parasite loads in a grazing operation vs keeping them on forage they can browse. I’ve been told by someone that moved from Colorado that parasite issues are almost nonexistent compared to what they’ve experienced in the south. Around here I only know of one high percentage Spanish and Spanish cross herd that don’t get de wormed regularly. I’m not saying it can’t be done, just that I want viewers to know that some areas are better suited for certain animals than others. Love what you’re doing, just subscribed, and love that pretty kid you showed in this video that belongs to that white nanny. I had Nubians in the past that would have rather starved than graze pasture, but dairy animals are usually finicky anyway.

I rewatched this. I think the way the midwest overlooks goats, sheep, and goose/ducks. Is kinda nuts.I get the problem with goats though line. You can 1 line sheep you can't 1 line goats. Never run across anyone getting that to work. Can 1 line pigs well 2 line pigs. Goats take more and most folks don't have the labor for it. But they can absolutely graze wonderful in silvo tree fodder systems. You can actually gather xmas trees at the end of winter then let the goats eat the trees then chip the trees for the pasture. And be paid to take those trees and get rid of them.

A lot of people have a lot of opinions about a lot of stuff. If something works, do it.
