Sets Explained

In this video, I explain sets, set membership, and subsets, as well as the set union and set intersection operations. I also explain two examples of set builder notation and cover the Naturals, Integers, Rationals, Reals, and the empty set. Finally, I show how to break down a difficult example of set builder notation into something more manageable. Also, check out Tyler Holden’s fantastic MAT137 notes if you want to see how I learned all this during my first-year calculus course at the University of Toronto.

Disclaimers:
Our definition of a set is insufficient for heavy metal logicians, but it’s good enough for this calculus series. Our definition of the naturals includes 0, and while there are good reasons to include it or not, in this series it will be included. Our definition of the reals is sloppy, but again, it’s good enough for this calculus series.
