After the "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast, CBS execs hastily convened a press conference for Orson Welles. It "was one of Welles' great performances as an actor. And he knew that his whole career was on the line here," said Media Historian Paul Heyer.

Welles had to sound sincere in his apology, which he may not necessarily have been, according to co-producer John Houseman.

"War of the Worlds" premieres October 29 at 9pm ET on PBS.

Every bit of body language said just one thing in his "apology" just then,
"Suckers". ;-)

One of his "great performances (as an actor" huh? Hmmm...interesting, I believe that the whole scare was either over-blown or a hoax altogether. Welles had been known to bend the truth to further his career. He took credit for writing Citizen Kane because he would get 0$ is he didn't direct, producer, star, AND write the film. He didn't write any of it. And there was The Third Man which people thought he made or helped make because the style is so reminiscent of his own and he played into the rumors himself. Not a dishonest man, he just likes to stir the pot and get people talking.
