TLDR: If you are put on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP), it is important to assess your commitment, evaluate the attainability of goals, seek support from your manager, and consider finding a new job while still employed.

In this video, we break down if that truly is the "Kiss of Death" and what you should consider if you find yourself on a PIP.

1. Employee receives a "behavior improvements plan" due to attitude issues and is warned to make immediate changes.

2. Salespeople often face performance issues, and Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) are used to address consistently low performance by setting expectations and deadlines for improvement.

3. Meet specific goals within a set timeframe or risk losing your job.

4. Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) are often used as a formal record of underperformance to justify termination, and the success rate of PIPs is low, leading employees to believe that they are being encouraged to leave voluntarily.

5. Determine if you are underperforming, assess the reasons for your low performance, and evaluate your commitment and passion for your position, role, company, and sales.

6. Reflect on whether you want to stay or leave, assess if the goals are measurable and attainable, determine if you believe you can achieve them within the given time frame, evaluate if your manager has a plan to support you, and find out if others on the team are also on a performance improvement plan.

7. If you're put on a performance improvement plan, work hard, meet all metrics, listen to coaching, and use your free time to develop your skills in order to improve and potentially retain your job.

8. Find a new job while still employed to have more options, financial security, and less desperation, and use what you learned to excel in your new role."

I survived a PIP. I was a good employee that experienced a disruptive event. They wanted to show me a path forward. I took it.

Never even tried. Whenever my manager said they want me on a PIP, I say - "Look, let's save each other some trouble. How long can you stall the PIP while I go look for another job?" Then on the last day we shake hands and I leave nicely. Done this twice 😅

I got one the morning of the same day. I was getting an award for being a top performance across the CS market for my department.

Call centre agent, basically higher management pressure team leaders to get agents to my level.

Call centre work has a high turnover. I have been at the job a while.

Hence time and experience It was team leaders trying to get me out. Not higher management.

At the award, I was asked to say a few words.

Thank you for this award. Consider this my notice. Put on a PIP when performing.

Higher management flipped out on team leaders. Not knowing their solution was to try and get me fired. Not try to improve working conditions and agent knowledge.

I find out 100% if I survived or not this coming Tuesday 23rd. My boss told me last week I was successful and I was staying but I dont buy it. He told me a few weeks ago everyone felt I was just taking up space… That is not something you should ever say to someone. I am told that even if I am successful one slip and I am gone.. it’s nothing but stress. He told me I am doing better but i am not a rockstar. He constantly says things that bring me down.

I'm on a PIP and I feel very much I'm going to die any second. I kept asking at the issuing date, 'if I do XYZ, will I pass?' then they keep saying 'well if it improves it (which it would) then yes', then I got it confirmed again and then say couldn't be sure. Having to work as much as possible and pass with flying colors. I do very much think they have no long-term view of me though.

I've been put on a PIP today; unfortunately it's over a variable I have little control over. I'm going to see the process through to the bitter end. If I get fired I have all the time in the world to make a wrongful dismissal claim. I am getting burnt out with the relentless grind tbh.

Organisation I worked for previously bullied me; particular manager. Going through that whole thing was a learning experience, who emerges as helpers can be surprising. Later on they offered me a managerial role. If they need you they will use you.

If you're put on a PIP, just pull the plug and leave. It's basically the company giving notice that you're about to get fired.

I already had two labour board complaints and at least four grievances (I have lost count). They just want me gone and literally said "why are you working at a company you hate?" Problem is that my skills are very rare and particular and only a few employers in my country can get the value from me that I can provide. So I filed three grievances and a human rights complaint on the PIP and performance rating. The boss found he had no reason to put me on a PIP after two weeks. Isn't that funny?

Was in Sales Management for 30 years. Consider a PIP your company’s 4-8 week notice that you’re going to be terminated.Act accordingly - start looking!
