Ed Harcourt, born Edward Henry Richard Harcourt-Smith on August 14, 1977, in Wimbledon, London, is a notable English musician with a distinctive beginning rooted in both a privileged background and a deep passion for music. The youngest child of Major Charles Harcourt-Smith, a former Life Guards officer and diplomat, and Sabrina, an art historian, Harcourt's upbringing was culturally rich and diverse. His musical journey began at the tender age of nine when he started playing the piano, achieving grade 8 by the time he was 17—a testament to his early dedication and talent. Despite his evident skills and the opportunity to further his musical education, Harcourt chose not to pursue formal music studies, fearing that analytical approaches to music could diminish his enjoyment of the art.

Before embarking on a solo career, Harcourt was a member of Snug, a school-formed band in the mid-1990s alongside James Deane, Ed Groves, and Johnny Lewsley. The band enjoyed some degree of success, releasing two albums and several singles before disbanding. This early experience in the music industry paved the way for Harcourt's solo endeavors.

Harcourt's solo career officially began in 2000 with the recording of his debut mini-album, "Maplewood EP," in the humble settings of Wootton Manor, directly onto a 4-track recorder. This project led to him signing with Heavenly Records and the subsequent release of "Maplewood" in November 2000. His debut studio album, "Here Be Monsters," followed in June 2001, produced by Gil Norton and Tim Holmes, and marked Harcourt's entry into the mainstream music scene, peaking at No. 84 on the UK Albums Chart. The album's success and its nomination for the 2001 Mercury Prize just a month after its release catapulted Harcourt into a new, unfamiliar world of public performances and recognition, a stark contrast to his previous experiences of making music privately in his room. Harcourt's move to the U.S. market, marked by his signing with Capitol Records, further expanded his audience and established him as a musician of considerable talent and depth.
