"They Hung Him On A Cross" is yet another solo performance by Kurt, there's no actual bassline, so I came up with my own. I tabbed it just not to interrupt the concept of the channel. I believe, for everyone who's going to cover this song on bass, it's much more fun to create their own bassline than to copy mine.

Kurt did "They Hung Him On A Cross" as a member of The Jury, a short-lived side band he and Krist formed with Mark Lanegan and Mark Pickerel from Screaming Trees. I'm not sure if it's fair and correct to call it a Nirvana song, but since it was officially released as such I accept it. The more the better.

The Jury was an attempt to create "a modern day version Cream or Led Zeppelin", according to Pickerel. They rehearsed several times, and when it came to the studio session in August 1989 at Reciprocal Records with Jack Endino, both Kurt and Lanegan brought along cassettes of Leadbelly songs. The band covered and recorded four of them: "Ain't It A Shame", "Grey Goose", "They Hung Him On The Cross" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night". The latter was released on Lanegan's solo album "Winding Sheet", and the rest of the songs became part of Nirvana's "With The Lights Out".

It was the first and the last The Jury session. The band ceased to exist after that, despite Sub Pop expressing an interest to make an album and Pickerel having high hopes for the collaboration and wanting it to become a working band.
