Can the the generated source code be viewed/modified, or does the tool only generate compiled binary programming files?

Also after downloading, the redbot executes it and does not communicate to matlab/simulink, correct? If so, can another com port to the arduino be created for matlab co-processing?

For ex, it'd be useful to do a hardware-in-the-loop control system.. using and displaying the real-time accelerometer data from the hardware to quickly test different algorithms without reprog
