The *Gibbs-Donnan effect* (or *Donnan effect*) describes how charged particles, such as ions, distribute across a semi-permeable membrane when there are non-diffusible ions (such as large proteins) on one side of the membrane. This phenomenon arises due to both the concentration gradients and the electrostatic forces of these ions, creating an imbalance.

In biological systems, the Gibbs-Donnan effect plays a crucial role in maintaining cell equilibrium. For instance, in cells, large, negatively charged proteins are often trapped inside, leading to an unequal distribution of ions (e.g., Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻) across the cell membrane. This creates an osmotic pressure difference that is balanced by active transport mechanisms (like the sodium-potassium pump) to prevent excessive water from entering the cell, which would otherwise cause it to swell and potentially burst.

The Gibbs-Donnan effect is essential for understanding cell volume regulation, osmotic balance, and the electrochemical gradients that are fundamental for processes like nerve impulse transmission.

thanks for the explanation :) i want to ask, does compartment 1 refers to ICF (inside cell) and compartment 2 refers to ECF (outside cell)? If so why do Na+ is greater inside compartment 1 (coz physiologically Na+ should be higher outside) ?

But according to your explanation there is not net membrane potential so Donna potential is zero?? How is that possible?

I think the seperating membrane between the two compartments should be selectively semi permeable 🤔🤔
