VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
On 8th May 2022, the govt of India launched a pilot phase of something called the Open Network for Digital Commerce(ONDC), which is a freely accessible online system for traders and consumers. and the reason why this is very very important is because the govt intends to breakdown the digital monopolies and Duopolies of Giant tech companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato and other companies!! On one side, while a legend like Nandan Nilkani is associated with it, on the other side, Anand Mahindra himself had all praises for the ONDC initiative, this is expected to be as revolutionary as UPI itself!! So keeping aside all the hype, in this episode today,
Let's try to understand What are the major problems in the market that promoted the govt to launch the Open network for Digital commerce?
How will it promote small sellers and businesses against the giant companies in the market???
and what are the most difficult hurdles that could turn this very same initiative into a flop project??

If upi hasn't come, there would be monopolies in payment space as well. So if implemented seriously India can be role model for many countries 🇮🇳

These would be the major problems :

1.Quality control...
2. Trustable seller...
3. User interface...
4. Possible scams...
5. After Sale service..

Thank you for explaining so beautifully. Actually Indian retail industry contributes a significant portion of the country's economy, accounting for around 8% of employment and 30% of the country's GDP (IBEF, 2022; Technopak, 2020) but mostly dominated by unorganized retail 88% in 2020-21. Organized players has failed to drive out these small retailers because of three reasons specially in India; First is rapid urbanization, secondly high density and third is the dramatic income differences between poor and rich. Day by day the gap is increasing. Now E-commerce is trying to monopolize the market but I think that they will not able to do that much destruction because most of the zen Z and millennials are high adoptor of technology (around 52%). Rest of the people stills wants the old way of personalized service, human touch, fear of online transactions etc. On the other hand 60% of people are Buttom of the Pyramid (BOP) consumers. They need these small stores to survive with relationship credits and smaller packages for mere daily necessary items. It will be a disaster if these traditional channels disappears. Governments has taken much steps to prevent it till date like banning FDIs in several sections. Now coming with ONDC is a great initiative but your points are extremely valid and important. Proper research should be there before implementing. It is interesting to see how these dynamics play in the long run for betterment of us, the average Indian consumers.
I am currently doing research on this topic. Feel free to contact me if you need any information.

Without buyer protection which big players offer there is no way I am trusting any random seller.

The key is service. No questions asked returns, immediate resolutions, timely delivery, protecting the customer is what Amazon & Flipkart got right. Unless the new platform gets this right, it is bound to fail. Leave it to the retailers and they will take the customer for a ride. Drafting customer protection policies and ensuring that it gets implemented will be key.
People usually do not mind paying slightly more for protection/safety.

JUST A WILD GUESS, according to me government has always been the seat of power but in recent times big companies have gained a lot of power and to some extend are misusing it, so ONDC can be seen as a counter by governments to keep companies in check.

There was a Paytm market place where we could order directly from small retailers, but the service was very poor like packaging, product quality, etc. Also, getting the product replaced was a major problem. ONDC will face this challenge and people would opt for big players like Amazon, Flipkart for the service quality and assurance they provide.

The wisest thing that should be on everyones' mind currently, should be, To invest in different streams of income that doesn't depend on the government, especially with the current economic crisis around the world.

We are all indebted to Nandan sir for his contribution to India 🇮🇳 his initiative like Aadhaar, UPI, Fastag, Diksha are all had massive success and many more in the pipeline. His vision about India is truly remarkable. No other countries come close to India when we talk about societal platforms and digital public goods

An issue I see with cheaper products is that, they are "cheap". As important as pricing is for the common Indian buyer, so is a feeling of satisfaction upon buying an expensive stuff. Similar is the mentality when people prefer "branded" products over local ones.
I suppose it's all a matter of time before we see which side we align to.

According to me, it will be disastrous if ONDC is not implemented keeping in mind of everyone, like GST was disaster.
If the profit of big sellers goes down they will cut the salaries which will again hit the unemployment problem.
More the competition, more the offers, lesser the quality.
More options, more confusion, more offers, more panic buying.
And the customer has to be more smart while making choice.

My father is also a businessman, but there should be another way of making them strong in the market. It's not the only way to directly compete them with big fishes.
And being the evidence of their previous policies they can't figure out all these even in 2 years. So I'm ready for disaster in the market.
