My personal tip is use a sling as a packing cube for your plane essentials. So that you can stow your bag either in the bin under the seat or in baggage and it's as simple as grabbing out your sling.

I love my Patagonia Atom Tote. Perfect backpack for a small person, fits many things including 14inch laptop and 12inch tablet. Never had a problem to fit it under the seat.

I’m traveling personal item only for the first time in a few months and I plan on taking the Kanken laptop 15. I’ve used the original Kanken for school/everyday for about 7 years, which I still have, but I recently bought the laptop version for the laptop sleeve and turns out it fits within JetBlue’s personal item size!!
