This is just some very un scientific red neck hillbilly testing between a stock brand new Oregon 3/8 lp .050 91vxl chain and a 3/8lp picco. 043 safty chain.

On very light thin stuff the 0.043"gauge chain seems to do a better job than the 0.50"gauge, or thicker chain. It slices into bushes sharply, where-as wider chains tend to push the lightly supported twigs and thinner branches out of the way...On thin "sappy" branches it does well also. On bigger branches it's narrower kerf takes less power, and gives the smaller saw (in my case a 017 with a 12" bar) a better chance, and makes less saw dust, which might be an issue if you are doing a lot of fire-wood... I like the narrower, lighter chain in the small woodland that I have, it seems easer, sharper "going". I use here: both of the above, also the wider .325"and 3/8" pitches on other saws,  so I do have a bit of choice. They all work best at what suits them.Best regards. From the west coast of Scotland.

I'm thinking about going from 0.058 (bar+chain from Stihl) on my Stihl MS 250 to 0.050 (bar+chain from Oregon). But is it worth it? I'm only interested in the speed increase, I don't feel much jerkyness from the 0.058 chain ..

I'm scared to death to touch the depth gauges again! They are actually too tall at this point, but it still grabs like hell so I'm just leaving them for now. I've sharpened the chain (file) 3 times.

I have Makita UC3041A electric chainsaw. I'm using Oregon 91VXL chain. It cuts smoothly. The chain isn't so grabby like showed in this video. I think your 91VXL is not sharpen properly.

I wonder if Oregon just put the longer cutters together with the standard rakers. I have a brand new chain (came stock on an Echo cs400). It is an Oregon chain, but that's all I know, although I'm sure it's a safety chain coming stock on the saw. Anyway, It's very grabby like that too. I checked the rakers, never filed them, and they are low too.

The problem isnt the chain itself, it works just fine and cuts smooth as butter when being used as intended. The problem is the power head of that saw, it is far to small and weak for the chain and bar combo or just simply not designed for it, I run a 3/8 .050 chain on my echo 490 and have zero issues and smooth as can be.

Did you have any luck getting the 91vxl not to grab? I've been running them on several saws and they are so grabby that they are almost unusable. They stop the saw suddenly in certain woods. I made the mistake of filing the rakers on one of them when I sharpened it. It got so grabby I had to throw the chain out. I hate buying Stihl chains (price), so I typically run Oregon on all my saws, but this 91vxl seems to be a loser.

Looks grabby when you
lay into it like that! Nice chips!

Was the very first chain brand new or was the rakers taken down

Is that blue area around the circumference of your bar caused from lack of oil or was it that way from the tempering process??? I've never seen that before.

I just put a new 91VXL chain on my saw today & did not have any of the problems you experienced with it. I bucked several logs of oak & it cut like butter. Also you changed the bar when you switched over to the other chain. I realize that its a different gauge, but if you are going to make comparisons make them apples to apples. You used a well worn bar & a chain that had been sharpened on a Granberg precision grinder. If you are good at sharpening, you can make a good chain better. If you suck at sharpening you can ruin the best of chains. Equal comparisons are interesting. This was not.
