The Austen Awards and Ranking Jane Austen's Big 6 Books! #janeaustenjuly

Hello and welcome back Alice and the Giant Bookshelf. Today, I thought I would share my ranking from least to most favourite of Jane Austen's main six books! However, that was tricky, so I decided to first give out awards in various categories for my favourites in Austen's work. I am celebrating the fact that I have now read all six of Jane Austen's books, but with the caveat that I have unfortunately forgotten almost everything about Northanger Abbey. This video will contain unpopular Austen opinions and SPOILERS for all six books.

Spoilers for Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion.
Possible minor spoilers for Emma and Mansfield Park.
No spoilers for Northanger Abbey.

Thanks for watching, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Great video, Alice. I’m Team Persuasion all the way!

Great video, Alice, incorporating awards and rankings! P&P will always be my favourite and Mr Darcey my leading man; I love how his heart runs away from his head and he has no control over it! 😂 Persuasion is my 2nd favourite and I agree that “the letter” is wonderful! 💜 Mansfield Park is currently my least favourite, but I need to reread S&S 🥰📚

I loved watching your ranking of all 6 books :) I still have two to go, one of which being Persuasion, so that will have to be my next one now ❤

I love all the books but Emma is my favourite. I read them several times and Emma has always won.

I want to watch your video so much.... but am following your suggestion to skip it until I've read my other Jane Austen books... I am once again likely to follow Jane Austen July - in August... which I did last year. I will look forward to coming back to this video :)

I didn’t like Persuasion the first time I read it but loved it on a re-read. Loved seeing your rankings and your thoughts on all these characters too ❤

Fun video. My answers for the different categories are the same as yours. The only differences would be in the rankings. Persuaision is definitelyy number one! Followed by Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and Mansfield Park (I love Fanny Price and relate to her quite a bit, but I get frustrated with some of the side characters).

I loved that conversation where Fanny convinced John not to give the girls any money 😂😂
Agree with Anne and Wentworth (having only read 4/6).
I wasn’t sure if you were going to put Persuasion or Emma first, I will have to reread Emma at some point to see if I still passionately hate it 😂

Gosh I am in almost total agreement with you. I’ve only read about half of S and S. And I have not read Northanger Abbey.

I love this so much Alice, even though we disagree on Fanny Price. Anne Elliott and Captain Wentworth! 🙌 We definitely agree on those. Henry Tilney from NA is wonderful - I look forward to you re-reading that! I gave up on it this year because I just ran out of time but maybe a buddy read next year…! I cannot wait to re-read Emma. Might have to pick it up in the next few months. The problem with ranking is that even if you liked them all, something has to come last or even second to last! Liking characters is something that definitely influences whether I like one book more than another. The letter - one of the finest pieces of literature ever written. ❤

Great video! I think my favourite side character is Mrs Jennings from Sense and Sensibility. She's such a scream especially in the scene where she's listening to Elinor and Col Brandon. My favourite Austen heroine is Fanny Price, happy to see some love for her here! Henry Tilney in Northanger Abbey is a really good leading man but I'm not sure who is my favourite...Northanger Abbey also has some great villains in the shape of the Thorpes. Actually Catherine Morland also has a pretty good character arc...I didn't realise how fond I was of Northanger Abbey, I think I need to reread it soon! Sense and Sensibility is very unsatisfying when it comes to the men, although I love Col Brandon, but I love it as a story of sisters. My ranking of the books changes depending on what I've just read but my favourite is definitely Mansfield Park and my least favourite is Emma (unpopular opinion but I find several scenes and characters get on my nerves lol!)

For me 1st is P&P, 6th is Northanger Abbey, all the others are joint 2nd and I can't separate them. I do need to re-read some of them though. Wentworth is my favourite leading man too, he is hard done by.

My fave is Pride and Prejudice, then Sense and Sensibility, followed by Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion, then Emma, then Mansfield Park 🙈 so quite opposite lol
but I love all of them ❤️

Got to agree about Anne and Fanny as favourite heroines. And Emma for humour, although Mansfield Park is a surprisingly funny book. Northanger Abbey has a lot of humour too as Austen is picking on the gothic novel. Don't apologise for putting Mansfield Park at number three. My favourite fluctuates and MP is often a contender. In fact NA and SS are the only ones to have never claimed top spot.

Nice video idea! I've never read an Austen in its entirety. I think because I haven't been able to get past the whining that seems to permeate every protagonist.

As you say, maybe I need to re-read with your view in mind that the side characters are the stars. Personally I love Mrs Bennet for that reason, but that's from the film adaptation.

I love Persuasion also. And I think Fanny Price is so underrated. She is strong underneath, even though she is either bullied or forgotten. Edmund is my least favorite hero. But I don’t think Mansfield Park is really about romance.

I would encourage you to read all the novels multiple times. There is something to be gained from each reading.

This was the first July, since I started Booktube where I didn't read a Jane Austen book. There remain two I haven't read (Mansfield Park and Sense & Sensibility). Having seen your video and Gemma's video, I am not being sold on Sense and Sensibility, I am not sure my favorite of the four I've read, possibly Emma and possibly Persuasion. You don't need to be so defensive about your tastes, it is enriching there are so many diverse opinions on Booktube.

Great video! Sense and Sensibility is my least favorite. I’m rereading it right now and hope I like it more on a reread. And lol. P&P is my favorite and I support each of us having our own opinion. Thanks for sharing!
