The original Midnight Cowboy theme is by Toots Thielemans (29 April 1922 – 22 August 2016), who passed away this day. RIP.

I used the theme by John Barry.

Movie: Midnight Cowboy (1969)

Dear Val, I remember watching this movie for the first time with you. And crying in front of you. I miss that day.

The movie is a surreal masterclass in urban male alienation and loneliness with one iconic scene after another, acting that sears through the screen and an unforgettable musical score.

One of my favourite films . The harmonica played beautifully by Toots Thielmans. Well acted & directed top film.

The melancholy tune reminds me of my Dad in the late 1960's.
He looked like James Garner from The Rockford Files.
He always wanted to be a success and be seen as somebody.
He worked at several jobs and after he and Mum divorced he remarried and bought a private semi detached house not far from Grandma's house.
He never seemed happy, always dissatisfied with life as though he thought he deserved better.
I know he was unhappy with us as he was constantly surly and bad tempered.
I remember the fawn slacks he used to wear, and the way he Brylcreemed his hair back American style.
This small tune brings back memories of my Dad always searching for something or someone to make him happy, and I'm not sure he ever found it.
Rest In Peace Dad, everything's alright now and I love you very much.
Love
Euan XX.

No movie has ever shown just how gritty the '60s really was as this movie. It also has a very modern look.

Dark, sad memories of my time as a 'hopeless ' heroin addict in NYC. So many special and talented friends who passed away - succumbing to their addictions ... Somehow I made it to the other side, by the use of methadone and caring physicians and counselors! Addiction is (at least for me) the loneliest illness that one can suffer. RIP to all my talented friends and other lost souls. Sending hope and love to all who need it, those who lost the most important people and self worth. Methadone proved to be my salvation. I was so far gone back then that I was willing to try any medically sanctioned means to salvage my life.
Many Blessings, Ron

I remember my English teacher at school raving about this film when it first came out in 1969 when I was just 11. He kept saying, 'What a film, WHAT A FILM!' Of course it was not till many years later I understood what he meant. The sad demise of poor Ratso Rizzo especially haunted me, its like something that could happen to anyone. Having lived in London, I could understand the loneliness and emptiness of modern city life and the seamy side we don't see, or don't want to see. A truly moving and beautiful film

Toots Thielemans is the harmonica player, and he was a master on his instrument!
