"Well then you're doing this for you, you're making this for yourself... not for an audience". This distinction is one of the key things that separated me as a hobbyist writer (in the past), from me as a working screenwriter (today). And for me, it's been more than just shifting focus to making sure I have the audience in mind, it's also about having producers in mind.

So I don't think it's a black and white answer. For me, at least, it's not as easy as just: all I care about in my writing is the audience. I once read a quote that said something along the lines of: to be a great chef, or a great lover, you have to be a little bit greedy. I feel it's the same with the writing that moves me. I think we, as audience members, are smart enough to realise when a writer is pandering to us, and just giving us what we want--the great writers give us a great experience, while also doing a little bit of what they want, making it a little bit for themselves, too.

I wanna know how directors feel about trailers that get put out. I just watched Green Knight and I am so happy I didnt watch a trailer for it. Im just baffled that they put so many good scenes to show before it even came out.
