Todd Miller and his wife Diana, an artist, embark on the boldest and cheapest construction with their own hands, in the quickest possible time.

Grand Designs Australia is an Australian spin-off of the British TV series Grand Designs, which has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. The show documents people who attempt to build a custom-designed house and the challenges they face. It is hosted by Peter Maddison, who meets people building the homes of their dreams in Australia.

In 2013, his vision to build a house from 31 shipping containers realised and featured on Grand Designs Australia, where it received high praise — the episode ranked as one of the most-watched, and Kevin McCloud, of Grand Designs UK, referred to Todd’s container house as 2nd in his all-time Top 10 Australia list!

In mid-2015, Todd and his family relocated to Bangalow, NSW, to open The Newrybar Merchants, a creative hub where Diana had an in-house studio to sell her art. Todd also engaged in designing and refurbishing vintage cars and motorbikes. He was joined by his cousin Ben Quinlan in Ziegler, and together they completed several bespoke builds in the region until they decided to pursue separate passions in 2019.

Following two shoulder reconstructions and spinal fusion surgery, Todd has now shifted his focus to designing houses, collaborating with select builders and mentoring up-and-coming builders in Byron Bay, ensuring his love for design continues to thrive.

This is a home with a story. From the downplayed initial cardboard rendering to the final architectural work on display, industrial budget paneling to innovative finish, casual build to exhibition-worthy art piece, it is clear nothing was left to chance. The builder's talent and heart bore fruit right before my eyes. His wife's edgy yet surreal paintings added more oomph to the interior.

Talking about it being tall makes me laugh. Some of those homes on stilts are really tall too. It's just that they look flimsy and this one looks solid.

This is a great design. I dont know why more people dont do this? You can buy non sea worthy containers for around £2500 in the UK. You just need the guts to do it!
