Architect here. I call this the iceberg of the design process. Clients don't realize that 90% of designer's work is "underwater". It's our duty to keep the water around our iceberg clean though. This way Client may actually see and become impressed with the hidden part. In architecture, we call it participatory or co-design.

"my wife doesn't like it" I've heard someone complain about that, when they (husband) gave all the initial design guidelines / examples etc, which were followed to the letter..
