Mini Sentences in Finnish: 'I have' | KatChats

In this video I will go through how to create simple mini sentences out of the phrase "I have" in Finnish.

I have = Minulla on _____(kirjakieli) + Mulla on _____(puhekieli)

If you want to say you have more than one thing:

Minulla on/Mulla on kaksi koiraa = I have two dogs
Minulla on kolme pöytää = I have three tables
Minulla on monta lasta = I have many children
Minulla on viisi banaania = I have five bananas
Minulla on kymmenen euroa = I have ten euros

ALSO,
I wanted to keep this video fairly short and simple, but you can also use "Minulla on" for other things such as:

Minulla on kiire = I'm in a hurry
Minulla on kuumetta = I have a fever
Minulla on huono olo = I'm feeling bad/sick

Things like this, but I thought I would save that for another time :)

Estonian works the same way. 'I have' is 'mul on' (although the full version is 'minul on'). 😍

I have a cat - Mul on kass
I have a dog - Mul on koer
I have a child - Mul on laps

Since Estonian doesn't have a verb for 'to have', it uses 'olema' (the verb 'to be') with the pronoun being put into the adessive case and it literally translates into 'on me is a cat' (and so on).

Hello from England 😊

And there are actually more levels of speech than the usual formal (kirjakieli) and informal (puhekieli) languages but it's good that Kat doesn't unnecessarily try to confuse her audience with too much information.

minulla on → mulla on → mul on → mullo
sinulla on → sulla on → sul on → sullo
hänellä on → sillä on → sil on → sillo
meillä on → meil on → meillo
teillä on → teil on → teillo
heillä on → niillä on → niil on → niillo

I myself use all of these depending on the situation. The rightmost ones are kind of extreme puhekieli used when you speak very quickly. And the negative forms get even wilder that this.

I love the rare times when Finnish is easy.
Also my cat was being a brat stomping on my keyboard while I was trying to watch this so I annoyed him back by hugging him and saying "Mulla on kissa" he flattened his ears and stomped away.

I wish you had explained that there is no verb "to have" in Finnish. Rather this is a construction using the adessive case of minä. You could explain this case is used for stationary location. I think that would explain why one would use the "minulla on" construction. Russian functions the same way where there is no verb "to have". You say "by me" or "u menya".

Could you do a video on finnish dialects and how they differ from eachother? I was in Sodankylä this summer and i knew no finnish but they said my uncle and mom spoke with northern/sodankylä dialect even though my mom is born in Sweden but her parents came from this region. I just think it would be intressesting to know if puhekieli differs alot if you are in Rovaniemi, Lappenranta, Turku or Helsinki.

Hello Kat~ It's really interesting that Finnish has a own word for computer, is not really common. It means something or the translation is just computer?
