I removed the centre from a narrower wheel and welded it into the wider one so that I have the correct bolt pattern and also have a wide wheel.

It’s not a difficult job but has to be done correctly or you face dire consequences, that’s why I would like to specify that this video is for entertainment purposes only and you should never modify a wheel without proper training.

With that out of the way, I also widen the wheel by cutting it straight down the middle and weld in an 1/8” thick piece of 2” wide flat bar. Then, I ensure that it’s balanced with a tire balancer, and weld it up solid!

After a full summer of driving with these wheels I have no vibrations or issues with leaking through the welds.

Strange how you were making videos like this and didn't get big until the Caravan. Aside from a few audio glitches and a lower quality camera, this is pretty professional stuff by comparison. Love the intro on this. Wonder if it would work for the massive new audience.

Very nice job and ideal, could help me fix a cracked oldsmobile SSIl rally rim .I could change out the whole hub rather than welding the crack which goes all the way across the rim.Just pull out the chrome centre and weld it to another hub.I have not found a place that does your method of rim repair or modification. But your video is the first. Exactly what I was looking for .Damnskippy of a good job once again sir.

Barry, could you just flip the center to change the offset?

Those axle shafts are going to flex like crazy with those wheel drive plates so close to the back bead, defeats the purpose of the narrowed housing.

How did you make sure they were centered and balanced when you welded it?

About to do this for a trailer I'm rebuilding for my dad. He's got three 6K "mobile home" axles on it that I'm converting to standard, modern axles. But I want to keep the 7 x 14.5" rims on it, because 1) I had to buy tires for it to move it, and I don't want to have to buy -another- set of tires, and 2) switching to a tire with a similar load rating would mean I'd have to go from 14.5" to 16" rims, and that would require reengineering the whole trailer. And when buying 7 rims (2 per axle, and 1 spare) costs more than the three axles you're putting in, do what you gotta do. Lol

need to buck up, buy a decent camera and just start filming this stuff. Lol

Remove the tire from the rim before welding. I had a friend that had a trailer tire blow up from welding on it. Be safe.

Dude...awesome fabricating. That differential is too short for that truck. You are creating too much leverage on the bearing. Axles should sit a little deeper in the rim. ...I do like your fab skills.

I dont think I would weld with the tires on it. 😬
