GUIDE

*Please note that the reason CamTrackAR can only be used on iOS devices currently is down to the AR camera data we are able to pull from Apple’s hardware technology. We started with ARKit, which is amazingly good, and we are actively talking to Google about the best way forward for Android - so stay tuned!

My advice for blending the background plate to the live footage.
Before I begin I would advise to make your background plates first! this will speed up the process, cut out headaches and create a more realistic end result as you can better match the plate lighting to your live action footage on set.

1. Take a full note of your (real) cameras record settings, FPS, iso etc.
2. Open and expand the UE4 scene camera (advanced settings) and input and match your values to the UE4 camera, this mimic your live action plate footage helping to blend the footage.
3, Take a snap shot of your UE4 scene - This is for you to create a LUT from the values, there is software and plug-ins to help do this.
4. Follow the export and import steps in the video.
5. Layer your footage and apply your LUT that you created from the background plate to the Live action plate.
6. Tweak your values.

By creating the LUT from the background plate you have just mimicked light values from cgi to real world footage at a value of 80 to 90% and if you shot and lit your footage after creating the cgi plate, using the cgi plate as a light reference, that with the UE4 scene camera settings that match the video camera settings, you will find a near perfect blend the key is the last 10% of tweaking of values.

i thought this was actually really but i do feel that the stormtrooper was too clean, but that can be down to user preference and the art of compositing with colours and scene integration, but again great job guys

If you want to record on something better than a phone, you can just motion track the footage inside of Blender, doesn't take very long once you have the workflow down (10min?) and the higher image quality is definitely worthwhile. See Ian Hubert's motion tracking tutorial

The accessibility to those assets for Unreal engine is awesome. Can't wait to try this out. Great tutorial!

This is fantastic! Just what I was waiting for -- I have been working on tests with Blender virtual sets & its motion track which also works. But Unreal Engine is quickly becoming a new industry standard. There's lots of companies out here in Hollywood who now can do real-time in camera compositing with your virtual sets. I love this workflow!

I wonder if something like a light wrap effect would have helped blend the trooper in a bit more, it did look a bit green screen ish.

Not sure if someone already mentioned this, but when rendering your sequence out of unreal check use separate proces this will make the render look sharper and you wont need to render at 4k anymore. hope this helped anyone

awesome - been using green screen for a while with fixed backgrounds, realising to get more interesting shots, I need to use something like UE4. This is great to get me started - thanks so much

For the next Camtrack tut, please can you out put the ipad on top of a camera and show us the best way to combine the camtack data with camera footage? Where would be the best place to drop the Y axis of the track data? Do we have to adjust for the lens we use?

This is a cool tutorial of 'Unreal Engine' and the great assets of Quixel. I must admit, that the export procedure from Unreal is yet to be accommodated to look like a real render exported final movie. It's more a 'Capture' than a 'Render', and that's quite bizarre for users who are used to a standard 'Rendering' process. Yes, drag and drop is the new 3D design of today's world. 👍
