How good is Chris Richards right now? | Tactical Breakdown

Chris Richards is moving to Crystal Palace with a reported fee of up to around 25 million dollars. Richards has the potential to be a dominant centerback and is one of my favorite centerback prospects. This is my reading of what Palace is getting with Richards.

He's got the whole package, and he's just 22-years-old. He's still got 3 or 4 years before he hits his prime age for CBs. It's great that he's in the Premier League at a team that he's got a real chance to push for significant minutes, and even a starting spot. As long as CCV can still make the progress that he's making, it looks to be a great future for the central defense for the USMNT.

He reads well. You don't have to be the fastest, strongest or otherwise dominant if you can read the game. He's got that AND he will only get better with experience.

Number one choice for me. I would even be willing to give up goals to get him more experience but it looks like he's ready. US hasn't had this much quality in the back line ever. Keep it up!

He's the best CB we have at the moment despite his young age. I rarely see young center backs who have his crisp passing and IQ awareness. He's good not because he's athletic but because he's intelligent and knows most of the time how to snuff out the danger and how to not get beaten one vs one. This guy is a level or 2 above the usual national team center backs like Zimmerman Long and Robinson and is better than CCV.
