Select the Instance object or objects then

Modify panel (the default panel on the right) > Tool buttons > Make Unique

It looks like a V above the Parameters and below the Modifier box and to the right of the Pin Stack.

thanks for your short and sweet explanation! but im still a little blur, isnt copy and reference then similar? like since if the 2nd and following objects are edited, they all wont affect the first and original one?

Now i know what to do! You need to select the instanced item and modify it from the modify pane, not with gizmo

For some reason making an instance or a reference is the same as making a copy, it won't change the other objects. Is there some sort of setting I accidentaly turned on?
