Awesome! Grew up with this in New England. My mom made it just like this. This was served at least once a week for school lunch also! Another good regional dish is Fall River New Bedford style chow mein.

My husband grew up in the south and calls is goulash. I grew up in the northwest and call it hamburger macaroni. When I moved to the northeast I was excited to try everyone's favorite dish, American chopped suey....but it was just the same dish. It's delicious and it's funny to me that everyone thinks theirs is unique. Yummy!

Just my opinion :) Anytime you add tomato paste you should saute it for a few minutes before adding other tomato products or liquids. It really adds to the sweetness.

Made this tonight, it was delicious! I used to eat American Chop Suey in school, one of the Hot Lunches served in the cafeteria.

My father would make this when my mother was out of town or sick. His always added celery, not cooked overly much to give it a little texture. He'd make a huge batch and it was always better the second and third night. I think that was why he liked it, cook once and have for several meals.

My former father in law made batches of this and froze them. When he would visit he would always bring us several cool whip bowls of it. He's been gone a year now, how I miss them both. Delish. I bookmarked and shared this video.

While yours looks delightful, my great grandmother in Rhode Island made it best. ☺️ Thanks for sharing and bringing back sweet memories. 💗

I do almost exactly what you did when I make my chop suey. I am a newenglander, I have made many chop suey's and everybody raves about it. If you want to try something different one day i make it the same way you do but start by caramelizing the onions but then i use 1/2 ground beef and 1/2 ground sausage with bell peppers. I also had plenty of red ground pepper flakes and grated cheese as its cooking! It's out of this world! The sausage makes for an incredible flavor. Enjoy with a glass of red wine or a fall or winter beer! Yummy, cheap, comfort food!!

It was on the middle and high school lunch menu in my town in MA once every week, and I loved it, but my mother never made it, and I never learned to make it, so I hadn't had it in about 48 years and had pretty much forgotten about it! Then I saw a FB post in a Boston group that reminded me about how it's a New England thing (and it's not goulash! There are differences!), and I just had to have it. I made it with your recipe last night and it was fantastic! Thank you!

This turned out really good. Thanks for the great website and videos. I didn't know I could cook until I started watching. You make everything so easy to follow and everything I've made so far has been a hit.

This was great and made around 9 adult meals + a little extra that I had after!! One thing I will say is that a 12" cast iron pan didn't cut it size wise, and I had to use a wok, just a tip in case anyone sees this. Thank you for the recipe!!

We has this every Wednesday when I grew up in Massachusetts. My mother used stewed tomatoes and tomato sauce with Italian seasoning. Local diners and cafes keep the Wednesday tradition going. If I make if, still try for Wednesday.

Growing up in New England, we probably ate American Chop Suey twice a month. I think every New England Mom had their own version of this recipe, and of course my Mom's was the best!
