Hillary Klug - Picked Up A Hammer

Hillary Klug sings, dances, and fiddles at the same time! This song is called "Picked up a Hammer," and it's from the Appalachian tradition.

"I filmed this video at Thomas Maupin's farm. Thomas is my hero and dance mentor, and he's like family to me. Even though we're not related, we've enjoyed a grandparent/grandchild type relationship. I'm so thankful to have him and his wife in my life.

This song is very weird, and that's why I like it. It's crooked, and the words are redneck. I think it's fitting for my weird fiddle/dance/vocal style. Hah.

I wanted to do a video with live audio because a lot of subscribers were asking for more videos like that. I hope y'all enjoy it, and I'll be sure to post more of a balance of live and professional videos in the future! Let me know what you think! And if you have any other suggestions or requests, let me know in the comments below!"

I’m a grandmother from NC with deep southern roots going back 300 years! My mother’s family are of Old English Stock and for generations have farmed a large community and township in piedmont NC. My grandmother used to tell me stories of the late 1800s when her parents would hold square dances on Saturday nights on their farm in the very large kitchen of their farmhouse that had a fireplace on each end! She remembered dancing to this very fiddle music! It is wonderful to know that young, talented people like yourself are keeping this part of our history and culture alive!❤️👍🥰

As it happens I WAS born in West Virginia, and there right now, my grandfather was a fiddler, and I can't think of a better ambassador to the world for our traditional Appalachian song, music, and dance than Hillary Klug. As joyous as her music and dance is, it does make this old man a bit misty-eyed, the nostalgia part of it, I guess.

Young Lady you just lifted the spirits of this Old Man. God Bless.

The talent is ridiculous. The ability to do it all at once is a testament to physical genius and hard work. But the joy in the crux of it all. That's the best part of everything.

What I love about Hillary’s videos is her back drops showing the close ties to fiddlin music.

She's amazing. Out here in the woods we have a good amount of hillbilly culture, but in The Sierra Nevadas we lack the Scotch/Irish roots for the most part. My family travelled west starting in the 1600's and many landed and stayed in Appalachia. I have an intuitive love that draws me to this sort of thing.

As a guitarist of two decades, the coordination this woman displays is mind blowing. Thanks for sharing.

Since I last saw Hillary (about a week ago for me) she has gotten a dress, new boots and added singing to her repertoire. I like it. My mother and my other grandmother were from West Virginia. A beautiful state I have visited many times. I have so many wonderful memories of the time I spent there and one rather unique memory. As a young boy, I went to church in a "holler". I wore my normal going to church suit, as they did in those days, and my polished shoes. I went with my cousin Imogene who showed me the ropes. I was the only one in a suit and believe me, I stuck out like a sore thumb. When they began speaking in tongues, I got scarred and tried to hide in my seat. I laughed about it then and even now but it is a memory that I will never forget. Thanks Hillary, for the memory.
