The first functional helicopter with a combustion engine was a German Focke Wulf FW61 in 1936. Sikorsky built the first helicopter in Amerika.

We, as Americans, owe a debt to the former Soviet Union for the helicopter - as Igor Sikorsky received his training and work experience in aeronautical engineering from both imperial Russia and post-Revolution, the U.S.S.R.
