The Boston Molasses Flood, also known as The Boston Molasses Disaster, is an unusual industrial disaster that took place in the year 1919 in Boston, Massachusetts. Eager to capitalize on the vast munitions market during the first world war, the U.S. Industrial Alcohol company built an enormous vat to contain large amounts of molasses which were fermented an converted into industrial alcohol.
Blinded by this mission, they ignored safety precautions and did not build it properly to specifications. This led to a catastrophic failure of the container, spewing millions of gallons of molasses and wreaking havoc on the area around the facility.
