Wasn't she trying to prevent them from killing those around her? I don't know anything about it, but I assumed she was playing nice to save the people on the island, right?

It’s easy to criticize with benefit of hindsight but how would she have known from an occupied island in the English Channel what the NAZIs were up to elsewhere? All the communication was cut off.

All of the above was only possible, because the British unlike i.e. Jews, Roma, Sinti and Slavs, weren't considered by nazi Germany to be an inferior race of people. Basically, that woman and her natives enjoyed the special treatment owed to their ethnicity - something that was no merit of their own. Had the islander belonged to ny of the aforementioned nationalities, they would face deportation, enslavement and genocide before they would manage to count to five no matter what.
