Hollow Knight review - Steamdrunk

THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE RECENT GAME. I played this game and was blown AWAY. It brought back all the feelings, all the engrossment, all the engagement that I once felt for certain games of the past. It's a modern masterpiece. Plain and simple. Even with it becoming more well known now it's still criminally underappreciated for how stunning it is.

Right on point as usual, Drunk. Thank you for all that you do. Your succinctness in your reviews is why I love your channel so much. I don't like how HK is labelled as "Metroidvania", either. The label really doesn't do the game justice, it is so much more. I started the game earlier this year and put it down for a while because of the slow start, but just last week I finally beat Radiance and am up to 107%. HK is simply one of the best games I've ever played.

I completely agree that the game transcends its source "genre". It is its own game that has so many great qualities - gameplay, tone, design, music, etc. It's now one of my top ten favorite games of all time for sure.

You have a way of getting me to play games I've sat on forever. I played Seiken Densetsu 3 after reading reviews for a decade and having my favorite games be that holy trinity of SoM, FF6, and CT (hence the icon). I finally played it to completion on my hacked SNES Classic and I now place that game above FF6, below CT in my top 3 SNES games. I bought Hollow Knight on Switch the day it released and it is still just sitting there....but this review convinced me to go play it. I don't know man, you get me or something, lol. Thanks for the awesome content.

Great review. My thoughts exactly. Except for the slow start comment. I mean...you’re right...it was a slow start...but when I bought it on switch for under $20 I didn’t expect much.

Then...the map kept growing and growing and so did the enemies and gameplay.

As someone who knew nothing of the game upon purchase...it was a pleasant surprise to realize how big of a world I was thrown into

I love the slow, subtle way the game reveals the story. It was such a refreshing thing that they didn't just slam exposition down your throat. I think it really added to the sense of discovery present in the game.

FYI this game is on Humble Bundle this month (and I think there's one day left to get it). Also includes Hitman, which, while not a game for this channel, is very good.

I've only sampled HK a bit so far, but seems good. Atmosphere is awesome. And I personally like the way the game doesn't bombard you with story at the start, unlike many games these days. It leaves you with a sense of mystery, actually wondering what's up with this world instead of already exhausted by the story before you can even control your character.

They figured the formula out 30 years ago with Ninja Gaiden. How would that game be remembered today if it started with 10 minutes of unskippable cutscenes?

Metriodvania is technically correct but the game's probably better served by the complete package label. Many games aspire to it but this one delivers on gameplay, tactics, story, art, and music. Cavestory and Bastion fit this Bill nicely too.

in my opinion metroidvania is the genre that hollow knight is in. just because it is very good or not doesn't change its genre. it that was the case we would so many sub genres it would be insane. games can have elements from another or be similar, and thats ok.
