March 27, 1977 a Dutch KLM 747 took off in heavy fog without proper ATC acknowledgement. It slammed into a lost-on-the-runway Pan Am 747 just as the Dutch plane was getting off the ground and 583 people died. This was at Tenerife (in The Canary Islands.) Due to bad weather, overcrowding at the small airport (all flights to nearby Las Palmas Island were diverted because of a bomb attack there) AND the miscommunication between ATC and the aircrafts due to the language barriers. These 3 things caused the worst air disaster (technically called an "incursion") in aviation history. Only the Pan Am had any survivors but because of the fog and smoke, victims weren't rescued by the airport's tiny, undertrained Fire Department as they didn't even realize that the crash involved TWO aircrafts, not just the Dutch KLM as initially believed. Ergo, more victims could've been saved had they realized this sooner. I'm not sure how many people actually survived, but I believe both Pan Am pilots survived, as did some of the crew and passengers who were able to jump out through the massive, burning gash in the plane's fuselage and whatever emergency escapes they could find and open. Others burned up before rescue unfortunately. All KLM passengers actually died on impact. Some lay all of the blame with the pilot who was at the time KLM's highest ranking pilot and instructor. He aborted takeoff twice before attempting the third and fatal takeoff. It may have been a misunderstanding with ATC, his arrogance or his impatience (all 3?) Even his flight engineer stopped him both times before this happened. Back then, there was an unwritten/unspoken hierarchy in the cockpit and subordinates didn't DARE question a captain like that. So, this accident didn't have to happen. The young woman who decided to stay behind (I'd heard it was a Dutch couple who worked on Tenerife and were headed home for a visit and decided to take a later flight OR she had decided to stay behind to be with her boyfriend. I'm not 100% on the reason, but I'm sure she was devastated after losing so many friends that fateful day.) 😳🥺😥💔 Apologies for the novella here! But my info is mostly accurate.
