The jazz blues. I know what you’re thinking. You don’t want to learn jazz, and you’ve no interest in playing Bebop scales. Right?

BUT don’t let that kid you.

The thing is, the jazz blues underpins so much modern music and serves as the foundation for countless, classic tunes.

In today’s new video, Rufus Philpot guides you through a 12-bar jazz blues - sharing his best advice to help YOU play epic bass lines. We’ve also included a bass-less backing track for you to download and practice with.

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott :)

Adding the fretboard overlays to the lessons makes a massive difference and makes things so much easier to figure out

After listening to a real educator & a SKILLED player in this video, I know who I would take lessons from. Rufus is amazing!!

This is so incredibly helpful, and the added workbook is just icing on the cake. I grew up listening to Jazz with my dad and Jazz is one of the reasons why at 15, I chose to learn how to play the bass guitar. However, in 25+ years of playing bass, I never really learned how to play Jazz. Only recently, after I joined SBL Academy, did I start that journey of learning Jazz Bass. Thank you so much Rufus and Scott!!

Rick Danko (of The Band came), Sir Paul McCartnry, and Jaco Pastorious III are my favorite bassists ever... I am primarily a guitarist raised on music on Beatles and Dylan... Jaco is so far beyond my reach I don't even want to attempt to learn a song by him, but I'd LOVE to hear something by The Band broken down... I've always loved Don't Do It (even though they didn't write it!) or The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down... I'd love help learning one of these, or ANYTHING featuring the great Rick Danko!
That's far more my pace and style! Thank you for your teachings!

Personally, I love jazz... I’ve been grooving to some Percy Heath lately with Wes Montgomery’s band. There’s good stuff to be learned from ANY music genre, IMO.

Nice job Rufus, one note though (pardon the pun), it is helpful to use lower case roman numerals for the minors when writing down changes using the Roman numeral method, but I’m sure you already know that. Cheers..

To bad he isn't playing his Moollon, its always cool to see one.

this lesson was excellent. however, IMHO, using just regular numbers is even easier still. formal music ed tends to use the roman numeral stuff. when i moved to Nashville 25 years ago and had to learn the Nashville Number System, it literally made chart reading/writing a %1000 easier. have never looked back. :) and it's an excellent tool for writing out jazz charts.

I’m kind of new to your channel. I’ve been a little while but I don’t always have time to check it out. I noticed you have some videos called bass players you should know. I’m not sure if you’re a fan of there’s but 2 of the best are Stanley Clarke and Abe Laborial. I think they’re better than some of the spotlights you did. I was wondering if you will ever do a spotlight on them. I’d love to see one on each of them.

I do not have a Little Woollen Hat like Scott and Rufus. Will this impede my bass playing?

Hey Scott, what gloves do you use? I've got a similar condition to you and all the gloves I've found are too grippy :/

So, not that it matters, but, , , , are you an Englishman or not? I stumbled on your awesome channel today and in back to back videos the accent popped out, or left, depending on how it is. Just curious. Great channel though, i created a to watch list that will keep me occupied for quite some time.. Thanks!!
