0:14 After a few listens, it dawned on me that the reason this part sounds so familiar to me is cuz they used it for “I don’t wanna live in the modern world” in “American Eulogy” on 21st Century Breakdown. I don’t know if that was a conscious choice on their part, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they repurposed that bit for another multi-part song of theirs down the road.

So, basically American Idiot is a bunch of already existing songs whose lyrics were changed after some sort of epiphany Billie had about writing a concept album about - and it's very reasonable that those songs, which already existed, were something similar to the lost Cigarettes and Valentines tapes. This is interesting, because shows how much lyrics can make a difference in the song, turning it from very good to a masterpiece
