I watched it from my balcony. How did animals react? The birds stopped chirping as the light started to go dim and the hound dog down the street barked for about 20 seconds. My cat beside me continued to bathe herself. It took several minutes for the light to dim and then, suddenly, the light seemed to totally disappear over about 3 seconds until everything was dark. The streetlights came on. My cat continued to bathe. The hound dog wagged his tail furiously as he sat and watched his people cheer and punch the air as the sun became completely covered. The darkness lasted for about 3 minutes and then, suddenly, the light was partly back. The birds began wake up and sing, just a few of them at first, then all of them as it got brighter. They started flying in flocks from one tree to another. It was like a second dawn. My cat continued to bathe herself. The hound dog continued to happily watch his people. Then it was full daylight again.
All in all, the hound dog saw his people weren't scared so he relaxed immediately. The cat was completely unimpressed. I have no idea what the birds were thinking.

I was at the top of Mount Royal, the mountain the city of Montreal surrounds, right near the famous cross that tops the mountain. Totality was the most unreal, awe inspiring thing I have ever seen. It was so far beyond anything I could have expected, even knowing about it all before hand. The weather was perfect, even the thin wisps of clouds over the sun made it better by there being a full rainbow halo around the sun the whole time. There was a 360° sunset surrounding the entire island. The corona was so much bigger than I expected, and planets began to shine around the sun. People cheered and people cried. Cheered even more when the sun came back. I understand more than ever now why ancient peoples were terrified!! Even knowing exactly what was happening the eerie sense as the sky grew darker and darker, and not at ALL like it does at sunset, the colour of the light was just so different, was pervasive. Absolutely incredible, and I am so grateful to have had this experience.

Oddly there weren't even all that many people where I was, I expected it to be absolutely packed!! But somehow it was mostly the stoners, witches, and photographers who knew to come to this spot. Truly unreal and glorious.

My sister had an app that gave detailed steps to follow for the totality (verbally). Just before it hit, it said to observe animals for behavior changes. We all looked down at her dog, who promptly threw up. 😂

My dogs definitely have a night time routine! They have their last walk of the evening, they all run to their own beds, then flip onto their backs for goodnight belly rubs, before snuggling under respective blankets (except the youngest who goes to get her stuffed pepper plushie and THEN snuggles up), and then they go to sleep. If we turn the light back on for any reason, we get accusatory glaring from all three!!

I saw an eclipse in 1979 when I was a student at Washington State University and I lived behind the veterinary medicine school. As the eclipse started, it was like a blanket quieting the animals. They all went quiet. As the eclipse ended they started to make noise again.
