[Theme Healing Music] Minos – King of the Labyrinth🎵

I am Minos, once the king of Crete.

People remember me as a greedy tyrant.
Because of my desire, the Minotaur was born.
I imprisoned him in the Labyrinth
and demanded that Athens offer their children as tribute.

Crete was the birthplace of the Minoan civilization,
the most powerful force in the Aegean Sea.

I was the adopted son and heir of Asterion.
But to claim the throne, I had to compete with my brothers.

I prayed to Poseidon and asked,
"If I am the chosen king, show me a sign."

Then, a sacred white bull rose from the sea.
I swore to offer this bull to the god if I became king.
And at last, I was crowned.

Every nine years, I renewed the laws.
I treated everyone fairly,
and Crete became a land of law and order.

But I made the sacred bull the symbol of my kingship
and could not bring myself to return it.

I tried to deceive Poseidon with another bull.
But he saw through the lie and cursed me.

"Your wife, Pasiphae, will fall in love with my bull."

And so, the Minotaur was born—
a creature, half man and half bull.

I could neither kill this divine offspring
nor imprison it anywhere.

So I commanded Daedalus, the master craftsman:
"Build a prison from which the monster can never escape."

Thus, the Labyrinth was created,
and the Minotaur was locked within it.

My son and heir, Androgeos,
was brave and wise.
At the Panathenaic Games in Athens,
he won every contest, bringing glory to Crete.

Aegeus, king of Athens,
feared my son's rise and his claim to power.
Through a conspiracy, he had my son killed.

As a father, I was enraged.
And as a king, I faced a political crisis.

I attacked Athens and won.
Then, every year,
I demanded seven boys and seven girls
as tribute to the Labyrinth.

Ruling through fear
was necessary to protect Crete.

Years later,
Theseus, prince of Athens, was sent as tribute.
He sought to slay the Minotaur
and free Athens.

My daughter, Ariadne,
fell in love with him at first sight.
She asked Daedalus, the designer of the Labyrinth, for help.
He revealed the secret of escape.

Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of thread.
He killed the Minotaur
and followed the thread out of the Labyrinth.

Athens gradually broke free from Crete’s control.

My daughter fled with Theseus.
But he abandoned her on the island of Naxos.

I imprisoned Daedalus and his son Icarus
deep within the Labyrinth.

But Daedalus crafted wings from feathers and wax
and escaped to Sicily.

To preserve my throne,
I had to eliminate him.

I demanded King Cocalus of Sicily
hand Daedalus over.

But Cocalus needed his skills.
He lured me into a bath
and had me killed.

Crete gradually declined,
while Athens grew stronger,
becoming the center of civilization.

Recognized for my sense of justice,
I became the final judge of the dead.

I decide the fate of souls
whose destinies no one else could determine.

Do you still think of me as a tyrant?
