Dyeing Silk for a Historical Ball Gown (Spoiler: Not a Disaster)

What happens when you have a bunch of silk, a Foundations Revealed deadline, and a favourite book? Dyeing shenanigans!
Come along on this adventure of dyeing several yards of silk taffeta from Red to... 50 shades of purple and lilac. Dyeing/sewing the petticoats was in some ways pretty simple, so I talk a little more about Ella Enchanted in this video!

This is the second video in my 17th Century Ella Enchanted costume which was my submission for the Foundations Revealed Competition 2021.

Check out my previous video where I go over hand sewing the stays!

I have never been acquainted with anyone who embraced the chaos of their creativity with so much love and acceptance. I know the angst and "Why did we do this to ourself again!" aspect is present, as well. (Yes, I talk to myself in the plural, and yes I I've implied you do it too. Please just role with it and we'll move on. 😊💜💜💜)
Ok, my point. THANK YOU for showing me so graphically that perfection doesn't equal success! Thank you for demonstrating pushing through to the finish in a project with rough edges, but with wonder, fantastic energy, sweetness, and real grit. I feel overwhelmed yet buoyed by light.

I see you understand how I feel about the movie "adaptation" (read: atrocity) that was Eragon.

How wonderful to open a video and have the first few minutes be nostalgic reminiscing/grand homage to a childhood fantasy novel! Movies and TV shows get a lot of spotlight, but fiction novels where you can just imagine the descriptions in your head is another kind of magic.

Dying is so much fun. I’ve done natural dying with onion skins and lichens etc and it was magic. Tossing bits of plant into a bubbling cauldron(ok....stock pot lol), abs adding yarn, then pulling out later, beautifully coloured yarns. I loved it....the only thing is that it takes a lot of space, both storage and kitchen space, for both dye stuffs and for equipment, and can be costly with regard to materials to dye, cos wool ain’t cheap. Money and space are both at a premium round here atm, so no dying for me just now.

Please tell Rosie she is a Very Good Pupper and I appreciate her contributions to your most excellent projects. Those are some really gorgeous colors you ended up with, and I love how you arranged them together in the skirt.

Thanks for the book tip! I stand with you when it comes to film adaptations. They rarely live up to the book.

"I would have lost nothing but time, but that was the scarcer commodity in the end" what a lovely and evocative turn of phrase!

A gown that Ella would be proud to wear. The purple shades are perfect. I was much much older than you when I was introduced to Gail Carson Levine's books, but they still captured my imagination and heart. I often suggest them to young readers when asked for opinions at the bookstore. Thanks for sharing this adventure. Take care.

The lens flair is very JJ Abrams.
I remember my Mum trying to dye wool for spinning & weaving with natural dyes. We got a whole bunch of sumac blossoms from the side of the highway to get it done in a yellowish-brown colour. I also remember her doing this on the backyard picnic table because the smell was so powerful. Your, now purple, silk is stunning. Well done.

Ooooh I've dyed with yellow onion skin before and it went very well! I may have to try this color next....

I really liked the colour!! Lilacs are jostling for first place as my favourite flower. I really liked how the gradient turned out on the skirt too! It makes the skirt look ... dynamic, is the word, I think? It's a cool effect!

I LOVE what you did with the differently dyed - a happy accident! Also Rosie's understated joy makes me smile every time.
