A TIGER IN PARADISE. A mesmerizing visual expedition into the intricate psyche of internationally acclaimed musician José González.

José González has experienced several psychotic episodes, where the line between fantasy and reality blurs. Determined never to return to those haunting depths again, he adheres to strict routines, immerses himself in scientific theories, and grapples with the lyrics of his upcoming album.

Man, I hate to be this guy, but I wish somebody had done this for me...

I have loved...loved...loved Jose's music for decades. He is brilliant and mezmorizing to watch and listen to. His guitar skills, musicality, voice, and songwriting are all amazing. In 2016, when my younger sister was living her final night on this earth after a year-long battle with cancer, my parents asked me to put some music on while we were there for her last moments...and I chose to put on Veneer. That's how impactful his music is to me.

All that being said, I could barely make it through this weird, boring, self-importent, piece-of-trash film. I do applaud Jose for being brave enough to talk about his mental health struggles, and there are some moments where the music and visuals were alright. Aside from those elements, I was so disappointed after viewing this. He asks 1, 000 questions but answers zero, and it sounds like a teenager who smoked pot for the first time (e.g. what is life all about man?).

It made me so sad to be so excited to come to a show, and then be subjected to this. For people looking to attend one of the shows on this tour, please know ahead of time that it's 80 minutes of what you see here, then 30 minutes of listening to the filmmaker talk about what you see here, Jose playing a couple songs (which were awesome), 30 more minutes of talk, and then a couple more (awesome) songs. I left so sad and disappointed, and after overhearing the people who were exiting the theater at the same time as me, they all shared the same sentiment.
