Even easier: put it in 4WD, make a tight turn on a dry parking lot. If the wheels start chirping...4WD works.

My friend used to go up and over curbs I'm his 2wd 04 silverado without any issues. When we hung out and got fast food, he'd park his truck with the fronts on the sidewalk

Living in the country we have dirt roads around so just stick it in 4 wheel and turn the steering wheel all the way and see if it moves without resistance or assistance of the throttle. If it needs some light throttle and kinda shimmys a skids a little dirt, your front axle is locking like it should and your 4wd is working.

You could just put it in 4wd and turn around on pavement. If it's working, the truck will buck and chirp the tires. It may sound like it's hard on the truck, but it's not. Keep in mind, I'm not saying try to do a donut, just ease around in a circle. No bucking and chirping, that means something is wrong with the 4wd. (This does not work with all wheel drive vehicles.)

I just bump the throttle in 4wd going straight and you can tell the difference if it’s working right
