Thank God, someone who just shows what I need to know without a general contractor level of "how electricity works" preamble/seminar. I know how electricity works because I am not an idiot and own 2 multimeters, but only used them for continuity purposes on electrical components and only did not want to blow myself up sticking a knife into an electrical socket.

No no no. The right side of this plug is live. This is always the case when the earth pin is below the outlet.

The order of the leads does not matter because AC voltage has no polarity.

But you never EVER do what this person says in the video.

If you put the lead in on the right side first, your other multimeter lead will become a live wire. If you touch that lead accidentally as you put it into the other pin, you will get a very nasty shock, and depending on other factors like what shoes you are wearing and what you are standing on, you may even die.

You have to put one lead (again, color does not matter when measuring AC) into the left side of the plug first, which is neutral, and THEN the second lead into the live.

Last time I did this I have It reversed and blew up my multimeter. But thank you for your video I did it correctly this time and it's saved me at minimum an hour of trial and error trying to install a GFIC wall outlet.

About a month ago I bought one of those meters from Harbor Freight and it did not work at all. I took it back and got another one just like it. It doesn't work either. I went back to my Radio Shack digital meter that I have had for over 20 years and it works great.

my new centec 7 function multimeter frm harbor freight has 2 choices ACV of 250 and 200.
Im only testing huse currents of 110-250, so I assume my multimeter is fine

You did not tell us which one is positive or negative or how to tell the difference. How do I know on my outlet which is positive or negative
And why is it that one of peoples the comments says you plugged into the hot side first and he said it was pretty dangerous?

Use one hand only. If, God forbid, the tester were to be electrocuted, using both hands would complete the circuit. The result would be lethal. Use one hand only.
