Volpe has to know. That once the ball is on the ground, it doesn't matter what happens at 2nd just kerp running.

Antonelli--You are spot on. Volpe should have ran full steam toward home. No excuse. This is three stooges base running. And LeMahieu should have stopped and got in a rundown. These guys are pros & should be ultra aware of how many outs there are and think on their feet. Come on Yankees. We have to win ball games especially close games.

Okay, the guy running to second base had a brain-melt. Not good --- but not as bad as Volpe.
Volpe didn't even have to think, He didn't even have to fly like a pete-rose out of hell. Just run to home plate.
Unbelievable.

Pete Rose would have been across the plate and in the dugout before they tagged that guy.

Hard to believe the Yankees are still in a playoff spot and had the best record in the league at any point this season.

For whatever reason Volpe became a spectator and started watched the play from the instant the ball was hit. That caused him to slow down almost to a stop. If he wasn't watching the play, he runs normally and he would have scored.

I've seen this happen multiple times while growing up and playing baseball. And many times I've heard our coach yelling at the runner from third to hurry up and touch home plate so that the run scores. It looks like Volpe and Lemahieu never learned that lesson

In LeMeihu's defense, if Volpe didn't virtually stop he would have scored. He was a foot away from home plate when LeMeihu was tagged out. Volpe didn't have to run *hard* or sprint, he just needed to not slow to a virtual stop to score before the tag play. LeMeihu probably figured Volpe had scored by that time.

Didn't you recently have a video where the Yankees performed perfectly in this situation? I think Aaron Judge was the runner on first, and he did reverse course to avoid getting tagged to quickly.

What Can We Expect? Aaron Boone Said He Has "Savages" in that Yankees Dugout Not Scholars as demonstrated by this Play.

So the guy who should have run hard slowed down, and the guy who should have slowed down ran hard. Wonderful

The main problem was that Volpe stopped to watch the play at second base. You can see the play in real speed on the game highlights on youtube. You can also see how the plate umpire moves into position to see which happened first (the tag at second or Volpe trying to score).

'Experience' is that thing you needed 5 seconds ago...

These guys aren’t learning the basics of offense as they come up anymore. It’s all about hitting homers now.

They're suppose to be a pros, it never should have happened.

How about playing the video all the way thru at least once either before or after your detailed breakdown of the play

"Charlie Hustle" would have not only easily scored, but put his shoulder into the catcher for being too close to the plate. I miss the days when the players actually cared.

Looks like something a little league would do.

My guess is that the guy running to 2nd assumed that the guy running home would...RUN. Yes, he should have slammed on the brakes and gotten into a rundown, but if the guy sprints home, then none of it matters.
