Thurl Ravenscroft - Bass Singer Low Notes

You’ve probably heard this man’s voice, and maybe you didn’t realize it. Tony the Tiger and “You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch” are his most notable works. But he’s sang and voiced many characters throughout his career, most notably his voiceover work with Disney. And what’s even cooler is that Geoff mentioned Thurl as one of his biggest bass idols and inspiration. His voice is incredible.
Thurl has great low notes down to A1, with a rare but solid G1 as well.
For upcoming videos, I’m working on a compilation for Aaron McCune. Possibly female low notes, although good clips are hard to come by. So if you know any good female low notes, feel free to link them in the comments.
Thanks for Watching :)
Sorry for any mistakes

I don’t own any of the songs or clips in this video. Credit goes to the respective owners.

Thurl has the most gorgeous, rich tone of a bass out of anyone out there. So tall and dark, but at the same time, extremely pure and relaxed. This man is my favorite bass EVER. Love it.

Thurl was an absolute chameleon with his voice acting and singing. It’s hard to beat a dude with a voice that’s so iconic.

I feel bad Thurl Ravenscroft died in 2005 at the old age of 91. But he and his low-pitched sounding voice will always live on.

Thurl is a true basso profondo. He's my favorite profondo along with Kurt Moll. Thurl may not be operatic like Kurt but both basses have their own unique characters and qualities that even after their death (Thurl in 2005 and Kurt in 2017), people still flock to their records and now that we have Youtube, we can easily search and watch their performances. True legends.

I joined Fieldtec, Inc., a cleanroom design/build firm in Santa Ana, CA in 1984. We had a rather bulky, then state-of-the-art Muntz video recorder/player with a company promotional demo video. Bob Scholler, who founded Fieldtec, was neighbors with Thurl Ravenscroft in Corona Del Mar, CA. Bob got him to narrate the tape. "What does a battery manufacturing plant in California, an implant manufacturer in Arizona and the Movie E.T. have in common? They all have clean air systems designed by Fieldtec, Inc." I loved playing the video and having people recognize the voice. The tape ended with a scene of waves on a California beach, as Thurl intoned "Fieldtec Incorporated, for a better quality of life." How cool that was.

He’s like the only bass singer in history to hit the notes smoothly and easily. Everyone nowadays voice gets rough down there

In an interview shortly before his passing, T.R. states that he was in music and theater in high school whilst he still lived in Nebraska. When his father sent him to live with his Grandmother in Hollywood, he sang in his Church's choir. Can you imagine hearing his voice singing bass in Hymns in the amazing acoustics of Church? It must have been just incredible.

(0:53) After hearing Thurl Ravenscroft's deep voice, it feels weird hearing him sing in a higher (and probably normal) voice.

Needless to say, he sounded just as amazing!

0:55 I at first wondered if it was really Thurl, but as soon as he went deep I was like... woah!

0:53 Wow, his voice sounds like a high-pitched voice in comparison because his normal singing voice is that much deeper!

He was Tony the tiger, he was Kirby from brave little toaster, he sang the Grinch....and so much more! Thurl was awesome!

I had the pleasure of meeting this kind individual. We had mutual friends and we met at pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach which he narrated. Such an amazing talent and incredible voice. So much recognizable work like Tony the Tiger, the Grinch, so many of the Disney voices and the list goes on. There will never be a voice like that again

As a kid I always wondered how someone can sing that low. As it turns out, many years later I can match Thurl note for note. My dad had a very deep voice, and I was blessed to inherit his low pitch genes too. I actually got down to 32 Hz on one occasion 🙂. My high range is around 440 Hz, but that's quite a strain

Thank you for the all the work you put into the video. Many of the newer generation of bass enthusiasts dont know him that well, so this is awesome. To those who haven't heard him before most of these recordings are 50-70 years old, so no bass boost or any other enhancements, just pure chest.

JD was technically the lowest . Thurl’s voice was beautiful with the most solid sound.

I'd never heard of him before I accidentally came across this while looking for something else. Thank you for introducing me to his incredible voice.

I can see Thurl Ravenscroft voicing a large animal character, like a camel 🐪, a horse 🐎, a whale 🐳, a long-necked dinosaur 🦕, a large dog 🐶, or maybe even a large dragon 🐉.

Love the montage artwork at 1:20, sums up his voice acting work perfectly.
