Some sports are position specific; in rugby, professional second rows tend to be upwards of 6 foot 7, whereas pro scrum halves tend to be below 5 foot 7. Other positions have different “ideal” heights

Being tall in cricket has its advantages when it comes to fast bowling. Taller bowlers have a higher release point and the ball gets more bounce when bowling a fuller length.

I think the way height works in basketball is very unique, 5 positions and depending on your height pretty much dictates which position you'll usually play (excepting if you have unique skills e.g. really good rebounding or playmaking could mean you play a position you're not in the usual height range for).

And although height is definitely an advantage, it comes with some downsides such as less agility, footwork and balance and a slightly worse angle to shoot from so some smaller players can shine in their own ways.

The average height is 6 foot 7 and so Steph Curry, who is about 6 foot 3, looks tiny compared to the likes of LeBron, Jokic and of course 7 foot 5 Wembanyama.

In football, height when scouting is certainly a factor but not something that can ruin a career, in basketball it's probably the first thing a scout looks at.

Tim Duncan at 6'11 was also a big swimmer in his youth eventually switching into basketball when the training facility in his home island got wrecked by a hurricane.

There was a study done on this and hurdles have a proven height range that are perfectly ideal

What sort of life did Wilt Chamberlain live? He did so many things well

Wilt Chamberlain is in a different, more unofficial Hall of Fame…but we can’t talk about that one on YouTube!

Boban Marjanović, one of the tallest guys in NBA history (7’4), apparently preferred volleyball when he was younger. His hometown didn’t have a volleyball league though, so basketball it was lol. Glad we got to see him hoop in the nba, not the best, but fun to watch and was just a fun dude in general.

"Did you know that Wilt Chamberlain wasn't just a basketball player?"
Me: No way you gonna say it

being tall in swimming is like the bare minimum to make it to international competitions. i'm 16 and i'm 90kg x 198cm and i'm just naturally better than all my opponents putting half the effort and i'm quickly rising on national leaderboards

Rather interestingly American and Canadian Football do not have a specific height advantage except for two positions: Centre, and Defensive Tackle. If the Centre is tall, he can snap the ball easier in transition to blocking. If the DT is tall, it helps them block passes and kicks easier.

The hext question is, are thre any sports where it's advantageous to be short?

Pretty sure Wilt being in the volleyball HoF was more because of the interest he brought to the sport, not because of his accomplishments in the sport.

If you do the opposite question than it might be baseball, while the average is above 6 ft, if you were insanely short you could do well with the small strike zone.

The nba doesn’t have a hall of fame. The Naismith Basketball hall of fame represents the entire sport not just the NBA

Baseball is an odd one. Being bigger means you have more mass behind your hits, but especially throws. This is why you also see a notable amount of talented overweight pitchers (they also aren’t doing much running for that position). Additionally, height also helps with catching balls, which is especially important for first basemen and right fielders.

In combat sports being tall can help because you have a longer reach
